Opening day – your guide

GWR train at Okehampton station
Summer Sunday train departing Okehampton in 2019

After nearly 50 years, the Dartmoor Line reopens for year-round passenger services this Saturday (20th November). It is expected to be busy so please read our guide to this exciting day:

Extra train and adjusted timetable
We are very pleased that interest in the new service is so high, and have adjusted train times for the day to enable an extra departure from Okehampton at 08 30. This means that train times throughout the day will differ slightly from the regular timetable. See below or download the opening day timetable as PDF.

Getting to the station
Parking at Okehampton station is limited, so we encourage you to use the free shuttle bus up the hill to the station. The bus will stop at Fore Street and Mill Road.

Buying tickets
Okehampton station is likely to be very busy, especially for the morning departures, so where possible please buy your train ticket in advance on the GWR website or app. Extra staff will also be on hand to sell tickets on the day, but there may be queues. Please arrive in good time.

Refreshments and music
Okehampton YHA will be providing refreshments at the station, and there will be early-morning live music from harmony trio the Hummingbirds (check out their music video for the Dartmoor Line Chattanooga Choo Choo, complete with tailor-made lyrics), as well as from Hatherleigh Silver Band.

On both Saturday and Sunday, the Dartmoor Railway Association is also providing refreshments on Platform 2, together with the chance to visit their shop and museum.

Dartmoor top tips
Dartmoor National Park’s outreach team will be at the station on Saturday to welcome visitors and advise on top tips for enjoying Dartmoor. (You can also explore our own Visit page which has directions for walks from Okehampton station.)

It should be a great day!
